Amdo is the region of Tibet that is the birthplace of the current Dalai Lama, and home to vast grasslands, yaks, and nomads . Travelers who journey on the Tibet train from the Chinese mainland to Tibet will roll through Amdo, and along the vast waters of Tso Ngunpo (Lake Kokonor) as they enter the Tibetan Plateau.
Visitors to Amdo do not require the special Tibet travel permit and do not have to be on any kind of official tour. (We do strongly advise you to hire a guide and driver, though, to navigate the complexities of travel in the large region). If you wish to visit Amdo, we can put you in touch with a reliable Tibetan-owned agent who will plan a non-touristy trip that gives you a real feel for Tibet. You can request that we connect you, here.
