The Kham region of Eastern Tibet, though little known to foreign travelers, is one of the most physically stunning and culturally preserved areas of Tibet. Large parts of Kham are outside the Tibetan Autonomous Region and therefore (generally) do not require a special Tibet travel permit to visit. And though you do not have to be on any kind of official tour in such areas, we do strongly advise you to hire a guide and driver to navigate the area. If you wish to visit Kham, we can put you in touch with a reliable Tibetan-owned agent who will plan a non-touristy trip that gives you a real feel for Tibet. You can request that we connect you, here.
