| Jokhang Temple Monks Practicing Buddhist Dialectics
On the roof of the Jokhang, Tibet's most holy temple, monks practice the lively, ancient art of Buddhist debate. The questioner, standing, flings an esoteric question to a seated monk, stomping and clapping in prescribed gestures rich with meaning to the participants. In the most lively debates, the questioner gets crowded out by new questioners eager to pose new questions, and the monk on the answering hot seat is subject to good-natured hooting if he fails to respond in time or correctly. |
