Ganden Monastery We caught a pilgrim's bus at 6:45am from Lhasa for the half hour trip, up switchbacks to the monastery perched gloriously at a hollow at 13,500 feet, a view of the huge Kyichu River Valley behind the ridge. There was new construction everywhere, and grass growing over the multitude of damaged halls still in ruins. (especially up and to the right of the central red hall.) There are now a sparse 200 monks where once were 4000 in this first Gelukpa monastery. |
